United Breweries Ltd (UBL) started in 1915 by acquiring 5 breweries, with the oldest brewery operational since 1857. Initially UBL was headquartered at Chennai, which has now been shifted to Bangalore. At present United Breweries has a total of 25 breweries across India, making UBL the widest present brewer in the country. The company also manufactures beer in neighboring geographies such as Nepal. The management of UBL is focused on building the brand equity through innovative and aggressive marketing techniques. At the same time it pays significant attention to the quality and UBL operates through its own and contract manufacturing facilities across India and has become the undisputed leader in the Indian beer market, increasing its share in the growing Indian beer market from 51% to 54%.
In UBL, a strong distribution network with an innovative, creative and aggressive marketing approach has enabled UBL to emerge as the leader in the market. At the same time UBL pays due attention to quality and hygiene during manufacturing of the beer. The Central Scientific Laboratory (CSL), Bangalore sets standards for all its breweries. Besides keeping a check on the production process, CSL analyses different beers that are taken off the shelves from the market which includes UBL’s beer as well as competitors. And the beers are tested on 40 different parameters as per the standards of the European Brewery Convention. By these standards, United Breweries' beers don't just equal, but even surpass, several Dutch and American beers.
